Automotive paint is a layered system, and the top layer, the clear coat, is doing two jobs: providing gloss and absorbing ultraviolet radiation so the color coat underneath survives. Once those absorbers are depleted, degradation accelerates, and the process is not linear. Paint can look acceptable for years and then decline quickly.
